Signature Homes Manawatu (Karacrombie Enterprises Ltd) are located at 187 Broadway Avenue, Palmerston North. They not only service the Manawatu, but are also happy to build in the surrounding areas of Wairarapa, Kapiti and Wanganui.
Signature Homes Manawatu director Steve Crombie has a past ideally suited for his chosen line of business. Having spent more than 10 years on the tools building before moving indoors to various estimating roles, obtaining a formal qualification in quantity surveying and experience in the steel fabrication industry; the prospect of owning and running a building business was a very exciting one.
"When I saw the opportunity to own a Signature Homes franchise I was instantly attracted. To have the backing of a strong brand with over 20 years of experience and proven business systems felt like a perfect fit for my own skills and experience".
Signature Homes Manawatu opened for business late in 2003 with just 2 staff, and now a little over five years later they have a team of 7 in the office. The growth of the business can be attributed to a number of things. One of the obvious factors is having a recognisable and trusted brand, with over 100 standard plans and the flexibility to tailor them, or start the design process afresh to suit the client's needs. Another is the focus and commitment of the team. This is something Steve is extremely proud of and has been a focus as the business has grown; "having talented people working in the right positions with the common goal of realising peoples dreams can be very rewarding, not only for our clients but also for our team".
Some of the highlights they have experienced over the years include earning various Master Builder House of the Year Awards; building for Black Caps cricketer Jacob Oram (his home was a gold award winner at the 2006 Master Builder Awards); and completing several Ministry of Education funded Child Care Centres - which are community focused projects and satisfying for all involved. Ongoing highlights are having so many happy and satisfied clients; and now, opening their second Show home. Having a Showhome available gives prospective clients a visual appreciation of what can be achieved for them.
"Our goal is to be the builder of choice in the Manawatu; not to break any records for the quantity of homes we build, but to build a manageable number very well with a real focus on quality and customer satisfaction. Personally I [Steve] want to make this successful business hum, with a little tweaking here and there, and with the mindset of learning from the past and making continuous improvements. As director of Signature Homes (Manawatu) he has added to his own considerable experience as a builder, quantity surveyor and manager by surrounding himself with talented people.
You can't do as well in business as Steve has, if you haven't got a steady stream of new customers coming through the door. This is where the talents of David Beck come to the fore. David joined Signature Homes in 2007, following a successful career in Change Management. Since then David has proven to be a great asset to the business, building strong on-going relationships with his clients.
As part of their inclusive approach to home building, Steve is dedicated to employing specialists in key areas of his business.
Sandra Carroll enables Signature Homes to have their very own dedicated Colour/Interior Consultant, to take customers through the myriad of options now available in the market. Graham Devey is the in-house Designer who is experienced at taking a clients' initial vision of a concept and turning it into the home of their dreams. If the customer is not sure where to start, the team will work with them to help define their needs, utilising Graham's expertise to adapt any of Signature's 100 plus concept plans to suit their desires.
It is all very well deciding to award your building contract to Signature Homes, but the next steps involve bringing your new home design to reality. This is where the talents of Jason Dawson come into play. Jason is our Project Manager and he expertly looks after all aspects of the physical building process. He ensures that the projects under his control run smoothly and on time.
As Steve's wife, Monique Simonsen-Crombie also has a passion for the business. In her role as Support Manager Monique works alongside the Sales team where she oversees the advertising and marketing and Human Resource aspects of the business.

'When we decided to build a new family home, my husband who was busy on the farm, made it my project. I had no clue as to how to go about it, so to get started I contacted around 20 building companies. Some never sent me the info they promised, some were barely interested, some sent me info and never followed up. There were 2 out of those 20 who were so nice and helpful. One of them was Hayden from Signature Homes in Palmerston North. He was so nice in fact I wasn't sure if he was for real. Turns out he was and he was who I chose to work with in building our home.
Never was anything too much trouble. Everything I asked about building projects, styles, prices – if he didn't know he said so and then he found out for me. I am sure he learned plenty!!
What I loved about the Signature brand was they had so many floor plans, exterior and cladding designs to help with the planning of our home. I knew the shape I wanted to suit our windy, exposed site, so I found one similar in their range and proceeded to hack up the floor plan until it resembled something I wanted. Then I met with their architect who made suggestions, tweaked it and made it a reality.
After meeting with Steve, the owner of the Signature Palmerston branch, I knew this was going to be a great project. He was just as wonderful and genuinely interested and helpful as Hayden. I was never made to feel as though this wasn't our project, I was included as much or as little as I wanted to be.
We are so very thrilled with the outcome of our fabulous home. Ten months later, we still feel as though we are living in a hotel, I am still waiting for housekeeping to come and pick up the kids toys!! Sure it took a bit longer to complete than we hoped, that happens when you insist on building through a really bad winter, but at no stage were we concerned it wouldn't be as it should. To be honest, I feel Steve went further than any other building company would have to ensure we were happy. I really cannot say enough about them. I hope they know they can call in on us anytime as we feel we developed a really good relationship with them. I guess I am one of the few who enjoyed building, even with a 2 year old, a newborn and 2 months living with my parents!!

After retiring from the USA and moving to the Manawatu from Las Vegas, we didn't think we would ever get a house that reflected the style we wanted.
